After correcting an interviewer who was using incorrect pronouns when talking about his House of the Dragon co-star Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith is getting accolades.
Sue Perkins, the host of Sky’s fan show House of the Dragon: War Room, was chatting with the former Doctor Who star when she incorrectly referred to D’Arcy as a “she.”
Social media users have praised Smith for his tactful handling of the circumstance.
“And this is how it’s done, my friends,” a fan wrote. Matt is a human treasure beyond measure.
“Oh my heart, Matt correcting Sue on Emma’s pronouns,” someone else remarked.
“Emma deserves better because this wasn’t the only time this happened at the premiere,” a third individual stated. But I’m furious at how quickly Matt turned passive-aggressive.
In a videotape from the moment, Perkins said: “I was talking to Emma and she was talking about how amazing that end scene was… and you received all the credit from her.
Smith highlighted D’Arcy’s appropriate pronouns without hesitation.
“Aren’t they brilliant?” he remarked, “but I can’t take the credit.” They are truly amazing, and this year’s Emma is going to be a true delight. I believe Emma has given a truly outstanding performance.
Perkins later apologized for misgendering D’Arcy and addressed the mistake on social media.
“It was a s****y mistake,” the former host of Great British Bake Off stated. I was not as attentive as I should have been since I had a lot of things going on in my earphone.
But no excuses. I feel awful about it, and these things are important. I adore their work and would never wish to be rude to them.
One individual replied in response, “As someone who is frequently misgendered, we understand. Errors happen.
“I’m sorry, x,” Perkins repeated in response.
