Simon Marks, 37, thought he had driven onto a flowerbed when he noticed his car’s wheels were trapped in a hole.
He looked at the damage he had caused to his car and thought, “Well, this day couldn’t get any worse.”
He was going to take a closer look at the damage when he heard a terrible noise that made his heart race. What was that?
Take a tour of the shelter:
When Simon leaned down to take a closer look, he saw that the driveway’s pavers were cracked, and the driveway began to give way in front of him.
The constant crackling of the pavers brought a whole new realization.
The ground gave apart easily, exposing a piece of metal underneath.
He opened it with his own hands and was able to grab it. He did everything he could to release it, but to no avail.
He decided to investigate the region and solve as much of the mystery surrounding a mysterious object as he could.
Simon called out for help. The two of them carried buckets of compacted muck off when his father got there.
Upon spotting an opening, they climbed down a rusty, old ladder to peer into the hole in the earth.
Simon remarked, “My dad saw it and knew right away that it was an air raid shelter.” “After searching on Google, we discovered that there are many in this area.”
Simon discovered, via extensive web research, that the shelter was constructed during World War II! Simon informed the reporters, “The previous owner must have known it was there and when he built the house and put a garden in… he must have filled it in.”
During World War II, a man named Sir John Anderson was tasked with devising a strategy to protect its citizens from the bombs and assault that they knew were coming.
These subterranean fortifications were part of his concept.
Bricks have been used to seal a wall. Even though we don’t know, I’m pretty sure we won’t find any more rooms. To make space for the foundations, they may have bricked up a wall when the house was being built.
Simon told reporters. “We’ll just have to leave it if that’s the case,” he added. However, the discovery quickly gained widespread recognition.
In the hopes that it would one day be acknowledged as an important historical landmark, Simon and his father plan to preserve and restore the shelter.
Even if the conflict is over, they argue that the moment shouldn’t be forgotten.
They hope that by visiting this tiny physical reminder of those difficult times, people will be able to gain a quick understanding of that era of history.
