Jennifer Hudson captivated the audience during the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary special this past weekend. The thing that really had folks talking, despite her usual incredible singing performance, was her haircut.
Although it may seem strange that a celebrity’s new hairstyle would cause such a stir, Hudson’s appearance had nothing to do with a bold new hairstyle or color for the event. Instead, fans expressed their belief that the 43-year-old singer had completely shaved her head. Although we are certain that Jennifer Hudson would still look stunning, we can certify that she has not actually gone “bald,” unlike what many social media users believed.
The 50th anniversary of the American Music Awards was celebrated on Sunday night (October 6) with performances by legendary artists such as Mariah Carey, Nelly, and Nile Rodgers.
Much of the discussion around the event was driven by fans’ perplexity with the current performers’ lack of acknowledgment throughout the ceremony. The short answer is that, as previously planned, the regular AMAs will now take place in March 2025. The ceremony on Sunday was an anniversary special honoring the awards’ fifty years of significance in the music industry, as the name implies.
The shocks didn’t end there; 43-year-old Jennifer Hudson’s attendance garnered a lot of attention.
The Dreamgirls actress wore a glossy, figure-hugging gown that accentuated her form and radiated elegance for the event.
The video of Hudson presenting Mariah Carey to the AMA stage was one of the most watched that evening. Social media users were furious with her look in the video, thinking she had chopped off her hair.
“Not me thinking she went bald although she would look stunning,” someone said on Instagram.
Another individual responded, “Same,” to the same message. She does, however, look nice in it. That is, if she ever does.
“Me too! A third individual remarked, “I thought I was the only one haha until I saw the pony tail [sic].”
Why did I think Miss Hudson had a beard? But it would look great, I believe,” said a fourth user.
A fifth person said, “Jen, I thought you went bald for a minute.”
“Thank God [..] she didn’t go bald,” one commentator said. Another user said, “I thought she was rocking the bald look.”
Fans might recall Hudson’s bald hairstyle from 2015. The singer at the time wrote, “Who needs hair when you’re serving face!” as the caption for a photo she had posted to Instagram with her hair pulled back.
Remember that Hudson’s emotional delivery of the iconic song “I Will Always Love You,” which Whitney Houston popularized in the 1992 film The Bodyguard, should have been the highlight of her AMAs performance.
Hudson was asked about her relationship with the late Whitney before her incredible performance. She said, “What do I have to do with Whitney Houston?” In my view, the gospel—that is, the presence—is a gift. It just struck me when I was young. There was probably never a time when I didn’t know Whitney.
