The child of Glenn Vernon Martin (1914–1997), a real estate agent, and Mary Lee (née Stewart; 1913–2002), an aspiring actress Martin was born on August 14, 1945, in Waco, Texas.She is his older sister, Melinda.
Martin grew up with his sister in Inglewood, California, and then in a Baptist home in Garden Grove, California. He has German, French, Scots-Irish, Welsh, and English heritage.
Martin was a cheerleader for Garden Grove High School. One of his first recollections is of his father serving drinks while performing as an extra at the Call Board Theatre on Melrose Place.
