Kevin Costner Says He Won’t Be Returning to Yellowstone in New Video: ‘I Loved It’

Okay, everyone, get in line. The beloved cowboy of the film business, Kevin Costner, has made some startling announcements. In a plot twist akin to a soap opera, the well-known Oscar winner has publicly announced his departure from the popular series Yellowstone. And how subtly, like a bull in a china shop, did he sprinkle clues?

In case you missed it, Costner just announced on Instagram that he will not be reprising his role as John Dutton in the second half of season 5. With the grace of an experienced storyteller, he greeted each person. I wanted to contact out and let you know that I know you like Yellowstone, the beloved series that I admire, after a taxing year and a half of working on Horizon and completing all the necessary duties. It has lately dawned on me that I will not be able to continue or finish Season 5b.

What a surprising turn of events! Just like deciding not to eat dessert, it makes no sense at all.

For me, it was a really life-changing event. “I loved it, and I’m sure you did too,” Costner said, hitting all the right notes. Again, he continued, “To let you know that I’m not coming back.” He then delivered a timeless quote to us, saying, “I cherish the bond we’ve been able to forge. I’ll run into you at the theater. Something tells me there won’t be a dry eye in the house.

Costner’s run on the program from 2018 to 2022 brought us to John Dutton III, a guy as tough as a two-dollar steak. As the father of the Dutton family, he featured with a fantastic cast of performers that included Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, and Wes Bentley. If the Yellowstone set were a rock band, Costner would surely be front and center.

Despite production delays brought on by the writers’ strike, the first half of season 5 eventually debuted in November 2022 and ran until January 2023. We were first promised a completion by November 2023, but like all good things, it was postponed. Thus, remember November 10, 2024, as the day the Dutton family will make a comeback on our screens.

In a heartfelt, exclusive interview, Costner stated, “I liked the people on the show.” The notion appealed to me. My favorite planet is the one. Kevin Costner is as genuine as mom’s apple pie when it comes to his passion for Yellowstone, as demonstrated by his #1 position in PEOPLE’s annual 100 Reasons to passion America issue.

The narrative continued, “It was one season and [like] a long movie, which [is] speaking my language when it was initially offered to me by Taylor [Sheridan]. But ultimately, I think the studio didn’t want it to occur.

Happily, Costner, the warrior that he is
