Robert, 32, is a husband and father who, with his wife Candice and their five-year-old son Samuel, whom they all adore calling “Sam,” has managed to successfully balance his personal and professional lives.
Robert and Candice are parents now, having enjoyed eight happy years of marriage. Initially, both of them worked, but for the past five years, Robert has been the only provider for their family, with Candice taking on the role of stay-at-home mother.
As a result, Robert worked until seven o’clock p.m. five days a week, while Candice took excellent care of the home and their son.
But things took a strange turn when Robert saw a change in Sam’s attitude toward Candice. If she tried to give him a hug or a kiss, he would strive to avoid her. Robert was aware that something was off. Why his son felt so distant from his mother was beyond him.
A few days went by, and Robert decided to talk to Sam.
“Sam, why haven’t you been spending time with your mom lately?” Robert asked Candice one day while she was out doing errands.
“Mum has changed. She doesn’t want to share it with me because she holds a secret,” Sam said, his face bewildered and sorrowful.
“What do you wish to convey? What’s the deal, please?Robert asked, worried about his son’s answer.
“While you are at work, she often breaks down in tears in her room. I asked her why she was crying, and she begged me to go while screaming at me. “She was holding a photo, but as soon as I walked in, she put it into the green box and hid it under the mattress,” Sam said in an effort to provide clarification.
Robert appeared taken aback. He couldn’t help but wonder what Sam had said in the green box and what could be the source of his wife’s intense melancholy.
What is the frequency of your mother’s tears? Robert was inquiring about everything.
This week, she has cried almost every day. She thinks I’m not paying attention, but her eyes are becoming bigger and I can still hear her. But now that I knock on her door and ask her what’s wrong, she closes the door to her room and acts as if nothing happened. I don’t like it, Daddy. You have to do something about it,” apprehensive.
“Don’t worry, son. There’s definitely a reason behind that, mom. Sam was reassured by Robert’s words, “I’ll talk to her.” Nonetheless, he was not aware of his wife’s predicament, which made him worry in private.
Following a brief exchange of words, Sam proceeded to play with his toys in his room.
Even though Robert knew what he was doing was wrong, he couldn’t help but search under the mattress for the green box that his wife was upset about.
Inside was some jewelry and a picture.
Though the photo appeared to represent a happy family, Robert saw that the man in it resembled Candice. At that moment Robert’s mind descended into the deepest recesses of the unknown. Could Candice possibly be disloyal to him? Why did she have the family photo that Robert had never seen or heard of?
Robert decided to hold the photo up to Candice and say hello.
“Candice, is there someone you secretly love?” He asked directly in a wobbly voice.
Why is that? What are you talking about, Rob? Candice answered in a hostile manner.
Robert went on, looking for answers, and held out the image to show Candice. “Who is this?”
Candice provided a prompt and insightful response. “Oh no. She finally let her secret come to light and remarked, “I never wanted this to come out.”
Robert’s thoughts raced, attempting to ascertain the situation. “You’re implying that you had an affair with me?”
Why is that? What are you talking about, Rob? Candice answered in a hostile manner.
Robert went on, looking for answers, and held out the image to show Candice. “Who is this?”
Candice provided a prompt and insightful response. “Oh no. She finally let her secret come to light and remarked, “I never wanted this to come out.”
Robert’s thoughts raced, attempting to ascertain the situation. “You’re implying that you had an affair with me?”
“My mother admitted that she had cheated on my dad with her partner. She gave birth to twins, my brother and me. Her partner wanted to become a father, but she loved my dad and wanted to stay with him.
As a result, my mother secretly agreed with her partner that each of them would adopt and raise a child in a different home. My mom informed my dad I was his, so he had no reason to doubt her.
Before he went away, Candice’s biological father handed her the grandson’s picture and the truth.
As you can see, my parents have been together for over 35 years. My mom’s adultery would ruin him if he found out. How difficult it was to keep such a secret was evident.
The speaker added, “Yet, I also want to get to know my brother.” She was aware of both her desire and her anxiety. “I don’t know what to do; getting in touch with him would hurt my parents in the end.”
Robert was taken aback by this revelation.
“So, is that your twin brother in that picture?” Robert asked. Yes, Candice replied. She did, in fact, resemble the man in the picture quite a little.
Robert hugged her and expressed his sincere regret for questioning her allegiance. But why did you cry so much in your chamber?
I’m crying because I never had the chance to meet my biological father. The weight of her admission caused her voice to break, “I also can’t be in my brother’s life without hurting my mom and my dad.”
Candice was still not sure how to proceed. She is still unsure of whether she should talk to her brother and welcome him into her life or remain silent in order to preserve her parents’ happiness.
