According to the BBC, Luca, a 41-year-old Italian, authored a book on how he came to be the father of Alba, a child who has Down syndrome.
In a radio interview, Trapanese said why his case is special, stating that it “destroys stereotypes about fatherhood, religion, and family.”
“I was informed I would only be given a child with an illness, a severe disability, or with behavioral issues,” he said to the BBC. “I didn’t find that problematic at all.”
Luca adopted Alba back in 2017 when she was just 13 days old and had previously been rejected by 20 families because of her sickness.
I felt content and fulfilled after spending time with her. Being a father is an honor for me,” he said.
Luca had worked in a number of special needs care facilities and had always wanted a family of his own. His passion for assisting people was sparked after he lost his best friend to cancer when he was just 14 years old.
He volunteered his time to Catholic-affiliated organizations, often giving the ill and disabled vital care or support.
Because of this, he decided to adopt Alba even though he was unmarried, and she is now contentedly living with her father.
According to the BBC, Alba is a determined young child who occasionally displays stubbornness. She loves to play and dance, and she enjoys having other people around her.
It was the first time I had held a newborn. Until then, I had always been terrified. But as soon as I held Alba, I knew I was ready to be a father,” he said. “My joy was too much to conceal. She felt right away to me like she was my daughter.
